program note
Majesty explores rich interval-colour sonorities juxtaposed with melodic fragments based on an equal temperament approximation of the kyemyonjo scale from Korean folk music—Minsogak. Dark bass intrusions of gong-like prepared piano notes and changgo-derived rhythms cut roughly into interval-colour richness towards an ecstatic moment of majesty, perhaps reminiscent of spiritual transcendence. The idea was to use colour sonorities and static rhythmic patterns to suggest Pentecostal worship and its ecstatic sense of the Holy Spirit.
